Augmented Reality vs Virtual Reality: What’s the difference?
VR headsets totally obliterate your view giving you the illusion of being someplace else. When worn the HTC Vive Cosmos, PlayStation VR, Oculus Quest, Valve Index, and other headsets are opaque and shut off your surroundings. You could assume you're blindfolded if you put them on when they're switched off.
When the headsets
are turned on however, the lenses refract the LCD or OLED displays
within filling your field of view with whatever is being presented. It
might be a game, a 360-degree film, or just the virtual area created by the
platforms' user interfaces. Visually, the headgear
transports you to wherever it wants you to go—the real environment is replaced
with a virtual one.
Augmented reality
(AR) a relative of virtual
reality (VR), makes no pretense of producing a virtual world. Unlike VR
and AR uses significantly more common technology, such as mobile
phones to superimpose graphics such as characters on top of video or a
camera viewer, which most consumers already own making it significantly
more practical for shopping, games and movies.
